The scoreboard

One war across every period and both years. Your faction's score counts the whole program, so the kid in 5th period is on your team whether you have met or not.

Nobody does math by hand this year. Points land here the second a marshal taps them or Sensei approves a claim.

THE SCHEDULE · OCT 5-30 · GD1 + GD2

Four weeks of war

Video days teach the history. Then you play it, for points: everyone, at least three games, three photos. Quizzes land on Fridays, ART OF THE CLASH runs every weekend, and Sony crashes the war at the start of week 3.

Everything streaming gets watched in class, because Netflix and Paramount+ can't be homework. Short videos are watch-it-then-play-it, same period.

MON 10/5 · OPENING DAY · ONE PERIOD

THE PRIMER + THE DRAFT

  1. Company Man, "Sega vs. Nintendo." The first 7:24, through Game Boy vs Game Gear. We stop before the Saturn chapter. The back half spoils the war.
  2. Console Wars, the official trailer. Ninety seconds of what you're about to live through.
  3. THE FACTION DRAFT. Sign in to the Keep, pick a side, wear the role. Once.
  4. High Score, Ep 1: Boom & Bust. In full. Howard Scott Warshaw, E.T., and the hole in the desert.

GD2 opens with the Flashgitz recap instead, then drafts with one switch allowed.

TUE 10/6 · THE KICKOFF · FIRST PLAY DAY

CABINET DAY

  1. The briefing. Rules on the TV. Two minutes. No video today.
  2. Spawn your wifi. Hotspot up before the first game, never at the bell.
  3. START HEATS. Sensei hits it once. The room runs itself from there.
  4. Cabinet Day, the whole period. Six stations, every one under five minutes.
  5. The standup bell, then the Captains' Duel. Last ten minutes. Your faction's average is on the line.

Nobody waits for Sensei to call anything. The announcer does it.

THE HALLOWEEN ARCADE

The whole room, every machine, the final tally
WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE

Quiz 6 first thing, then the doors open. Come dressed as a character from your faction's side of the war: Sega Kids as Sega characters, Nintendo Kids as Nintendo characters, Sony Kids as PlayStation characters. Every costume that fits your side pays your faction.

Then the Captains' Final for 256, the last points land, END ROUND fires on the scoreboard, and one faction takes the war.

32 per costume from your side · 256 for the Captains' Final · the tally decides it

STATION PROTOCOL · READ IT ONCE, THEN IT'S ON YOU

Seven rules and a bell

1NO PROOF, NO POINTS

If it isn't logged or photographed, it didn't happen. No exceptions, no "but you saw me."

2LOG IT BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE STATION

Marshaled station: the marshal taps it while you watch. Self-run station: photo of the score screen with you in the shot, posted in #waroftheconsoles in the claim format. Tallied later.

3THE BELL IS THE DEADLINE

Claims posted after the bell don't count. DOJO-KUN checks the timestamp, not your story.

4ONE CHAMPION, ONE GAME, THEN ROTATE

Your captain sends you. You play. You log it. You move. Your three games are at three different stations.

5THE MARSHAL'S CALL IS FINAL

Arguing at the station costs your faction 32. Disputes go through your captain, after.

6YOUR PHOTOS ARE YOUR STANDUP

One photo per game. Three games, three photos. Send each one the moment the game ends, as a DM to yourself on Discord, so it's on your PC by the bell.

7THE STANDUP BELL

Five minutes to post. Your faction's average in your period is on the line, and a blank is a zero.

-32THE PENALTY

Playing anything on a PC that isn't a marshaled station. Doomscrolling. Arguing with the marshal. Your whole side pays.

THE HEATS · THE ROOM RUNS ON A 5:30 CYCLE

  • 0:00"3, 2, 1, GO!"Heat number on the TV. Every station starts at once.
  • 4:00ONE MINUTEFinish what you're doing.
  • 4:50TEN SECONDSHands where we can see them.
  • 5:00"GAME!"TIME on the screen. Log your score now, not later.
  • 5:00-5:30"CHOOSE YOUR CHARACTER!"Captains send the next champions. Then it loops.
THE ANNOUNCER

The voice is the Smash 64 announcer, through the room speakers, run by the TV. Sensei hits START HEATS once at the top of the period and never calls a heat again.

Station numbers, penalties and lead changes show up as giant text on the TVs, timed to the clip. Blue Team Wins, Red Team Wins, Green Team Wins: factions are Smash team colors, and green is SEGA / M$.

Sensei still triggers three things by hand: the standup bell, the Captains' Duel, and END ROUND.

10:00THE STANDUP BELL

Heats stop. Five minutes to post your three games and three photos. If you spawned your wifi at walk-in, this takes ninety seconds.

5:00THE CAPTAINS' DUEL

At whichever station Sensei calls, never the big TV. Under four minutes. The winning captain's faction takes 64.

0:30THE TALLY

DOJO-KUN closes the window. The faction with the highest standup average in that period takes 128. No post is a zero. Excused absences don't count against you. Fanfares, then the bell.

CLAIMS · PHOTO OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN

How a point gets on the board

A claim is one photo and one line in #waroftheconsoles. DOJO-KUN works out who you are, what faction, what period and what station from the post itself. You don't fill out anything.

Spawn your wifi when you walk in, because cell service in the room is bad: make your own PC a Windows hotspot before the first game and join it on your phone. Never at the bell.

THE FORMAT · GAME, THEN SCORE dk 18400 pong beat jayden 5-3 et 3 escapes

Typos are fine. "pacmn" and "dk" both land. Names match on first name, last initial, nickname or display name.

Confident match: DOJO-KUN replies "Got it, waiting on Sensei." Not sure: it gives you buttons. No photo: "Photo or it didn't happen."

Sensei approves or rejects every claim in the console. Approved claims hit the scoreboard with a fanfare.

WHAT THE FEED SHOWS · ON THIS PAGE AND ON THE TVS
+32 SEGA · Jayden L. beat Kai J. at PONG, 5-3 · Station 3 · P2
+8 NINTENDO · Zoey D. stepped up at DONKEY KONG · Station 5 · P2
+32 SEGA · Max G. · SHINOBI 52,000 · Station 6 · P3
+128 NINTENDO · STANDUP AVERAGE · P5

One live message per Challenge Day in Discord, kept up to date by DOJO-KUN, plus one recap per period at the bell: faction totals, top play, the Captains' Duel, and who took the standup average.

Sensei will not help you with photos, wifi or Discord during a Challenge Day. Ask your captain. Ask before the bell.

CAPTAINS + MARSHALS · WHO RUNS THE FLOOR

Captains send. Marshals call.

CAPTAINS

TWO PER FACTION PER PERIOD · ROLES: SEGA / NINTENDO / SONY CAPTAIN

Auto-assigned by DOJO-KUN from the highest standup averages in that faction and period, after the draft locks and again when Sony enters. Sensei can override with one tap.

  • Send champions. Matchups are the fun part. Think Pokemon.
  • Run the rotation. Everyone on your side plays three games at three different stations, and nobody goes twice at a station until everyone has gone once.
  • Chase proof. If a teammate's claim isn't posted, that's on you.
  • Own disputes. You are the only channel to the marshal after a call.
  • Play. Captains fight in the Captains' Duel every Challenge Day.

MARSHALS

内弟子 UCHI-DESHI · MASTER'S APPRENTICE · NEUTRAL BY RULE

Uchi-deshi run the marshaled stations: versus matches and judgment calls. They don't play for a faction during the war, they take the standup photos, and they get a marshal payout.

  • One station each. Their phone shows only that station. Tap the winner: 8 for stepping up, 32 for the win.
  • Everything lands live in Sensei's console with UNDO.
  • Helpers without Discord get a day-only marshal link.
  • Sensei marshals the station nearest his desk.

Self-run stations are score games: proof is the photo of the final screen with you in it.

CP FLEX · THE WAR DOESN'T STOP AT THE BELL

Overtime

CP Flex is a continuation of the war. Every PC in the room is locked: nobody plays games on a PC during Flex. Consoles and cabinets only. Points count, same claim format, photo plus the line.

Photos stay on your phone until PCs unlock with ten minutes left. Then you spawn your hotspot and post your claims. No standup, no captains.

The studio rule still holds: a student with work to do takes precedence over a student playing. Finish your work, then fight.

CHALLENGE DAYS ARE DIFFERENT

PCs stay on during class

On Tuesdays and Thursdays the PCs are on for hotspots and claims. Gaming on one is still minus 32. The lock is a Flex thing.

THE FACTION DRAFT · MON 10/5

Pick your faction. Once.

Sign in with Discord in the Keep, tap your faction, done. DOJO-KUN hands you the role and your handle wears it from here on. No switching in GD1. GD2 gets one switch during draft week, and the faction you finish on is the badge you keep.

When Sony enters on Mon 10/19 a capped defection window opens for one period, and DOJO-KUN fills the rest of Sony's ranks from the bigger side.

SEGA

ROLE: SEGA KID
THE CASE FOR

Sega started in 1940 as Standard Games in Honolulu, putting coin-op machines on military bases, then moved to Tokyo as Service Games: SE-GA. They were arcade pioneers before "arcade" was a word anyone used. Periscope, 1966, is the machine that made a quarter the price of a play. Then Yu Suzuki's cabinets: Hang-On, Out Run, After Burner, Space Harrier, Shinobi, machines that moved under you while the rest of the industry stood still.

Marketing geniuses too. "Genesis does what Nintendon't." A 16-bit console two years before Nintendo's, a hedgehog with attitude, and ads that told kids the other guys were for babies. They were the first company to ever beat Nintendo.

And in 1996, when a broke graphics startup needed money, Sega wrote the $5 million check. Its name was NVIDIA. Its first card shipped with Sega's 3D arcade games on it, Sega's 3D work is part of why PC graphics acceleration exists, and that stake would be worth around a trillion dollars today. Then the Dreamcast shipped with a modem in the box and put console players online before anyone else got there.

THE CASE AGAINST

Wears its edge so hard it cuts itself. The 32X. A surprise $399 Saturn launch. Sega of Japan and Sega of America fighting each other harder than either one fought Nintendo.

NINTENDO

ROLE: NINTENDO KID
THE CASE FOR

Nintendo started in 1889 in Kyoto, hand-painting hanafuda playing cards. For seventy years that was the whole company. Then it tried taxis, instant rice, a love hotel chain, and finally toys: Gunpei Yokoi's Ultra Hand, the Love Tester, light guns in a converted bowling alley. The toy company learned how to make a thing you couldn't put down, and Game & Watch put that thing in your pocket.

The industry died in 1983 and the NES brought it back, with a Seal of Quality on the box and a rule that nobody got to flood the shelves with junk again. Then it kept inventing genres: Super Mario Bros. set the rules for the side-scroller, Metroid is half of the word Metroidvania, Mario Kart made the kart racer, Smash made the platform fighter.

Forty years later it is still the only one of the three that has never left the hardware business, and the Switch is one of the best-selling consoles ever made. Everyone else chases specs. Nintendo chases the feeling of the Ultra Hand.

Nintendo means quality. A first-party Nintendo game ships finished, polished, and playable by your little cousin and your grandma on the same couch. That is the whole brand, and it has held for forty years.

THE CASE AGAINST

Sues fast and sues often: emulators, fan games, the makers of Palworld. Some call that protecting the brand. Some call it monopolistic and anti-consumer.

And "quality" cuts both ways: copy-paste money grabs. The same Mario Kart sold on three consoles in a row, decade-old games re-released at full price, Pokemon shipping on a yearly clock whether it is finished or not. Nintendo never discounts, because it knows you will pay.
